Message: Hi Dotty, I went on your site from your newsletter. I really like your site. I'm having webforcepro do mine, and I'm not crazy about it, but I'm working on it. Still lots of details to work out. Anyway, thought I'd pop on & say Hi!

RADON
Health Risk, Detection, and Mitigation
Radon is a naturally occurring colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced from the radioactive decay of radium. Radon occurs naturally in geologic formations containing uranium, granite, shale, phosphate or pitch. It occurs naturally in most soils and water from underground aquifers may carry the gas.
Radon is a known health risk of developing lung cancer. Exposures typically occur in confined area such as buildings, however, caution should be taken when working in trenches or excavations where geology is know to have high radon gas potential. The EPA estimates that 20,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the U.S.A. may be directly attributed to radon exposure. The radioactive decay of alpha particles inhaled in dust or smoke decays and damages cell DNA causing cell mutations eventually leading to CANCER.
Detection devices and instruments are commercially available. When planning a development, it may be difficult to predict whether a radon problem will exist in buildings to be built. Investigation into site geology and neighboring property will be required. If radon potential is confirmed, remedial steps in design are advised to keep levels acceptable.
Cement should be poured over dirt floor basements. Crawl spaces should be isolated from the rest of the structure and vented to the outside. A sub-slab depressurization system is inserted vertically through the concrete slab and vented out the building through the roof or side wall. Other methods such as forced ventilation, sub-slab suction, drain tile suction may be used. Negligence claims can be made against the developer or builder for failure to use reasonable care when selecting the construction site or not alerting buyers to the possibility and dangers of radon gas problems.
